OUR LEGACY

The Miami- Biscayne Bay Chapter is the third chapter of The Links, Incorporated to be established within the geographic boundaries of Miami-Dade County, FL, joining the Greater Miami and Dade County Chapters in friendship and service to the community. In the coming weeks, the Miami-Biscayne Bay Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, will further introduce themselves, their goals and program focus for 2010-2011.

MIAMI -- Thirty- one of South Florida’s most accomplished professional women were recently inducted as charter members of the Miami-Biscayne Bay Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, an international service organization of concerned, committed, and talented women, linked in friendship, to enrich, sustain, and ensure the cultural and economic survival of African Americans and persons of African descent. Founded in 1946, The Links, Incorporated (“The Links”) is among the most prestigious associations of African American women in the world.

The Induction Ceremony, held one day before the First Plenary Session of The Links, Incorporated, 37th National Assembly in Detroit, Michigan on June 30, 2010, culminated a full year of candidate orientation and community service programming. The Miami-Biscayne Bay Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is the first chapter of the organization’s 274 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, to be chartered on a national stage before the formal Assembly of The Links membership.

CHAPTER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Empowering Through Education, Health, and Community Engagement: The Miami-Biscayne Bay Chapter of The Links, Incorporate

The Miami-Biscayne Bay Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is deeply committed to uplifting the community through various impactful initiatives. Recognizing the pivotal role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the chapter actively supports these institutions by providing scholarships to deserving students. This addresses the rising cost of higher education and empowers future leaders within the African American community.
To further bolster their scholarship efforts and local programming, the chapter hosts "Splendor on the Bay," a signature fundraising event. This elegant affair brings together community partners and supporters, showcasing the chapter's commitment to educational advancement and community development through collaborative partnerships. Beyond education, the chapter is dedicated to addressing critical community needs. Their involvement spans a wide range of initiatives, including:

  • Lotus House - "Dress her from the Inside Out" Workshop: This program focuses on empowering women at Lotus House, a shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness.

  • Get Out to Vote Campaigns: The chapter actively promotes civic engagement and encourages voter participation.

  • Links Day at the Capitol: Advocating for important issues and policies at the state level.

  • Black Family Expo: Celebrating and supporting Black families through community events and resources.

  • Build a House in Haiti: Contributing to international efforts and providing support to communities in need.

  • Black K.A.R.E. (Kidney Awareness Resources Education): As a recipient of a national sub-grant, the chapter raises awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD) within Black communities. They focus on risk factors, complications, treatment, and prevention to reduce kidney failure and improve outcomes.

Services to Youth

Today, The Links, Incorporated continues to implement programs that are responsive to the academic, cultural, health, social awareness, career development, and mentoring needs of youth. The Services to Youth facet is an integrated approach to preparing young people to succeed in the 21st century workforce.

The Arts

The Links support of the arts can be traced to our cultured co-founder Margaret Roselle Hawkins. Her innate artistic talent, discovered at a young age, earned her a four-year scholarship to the Women’s School of Design, later known as the Moore Institute of Art. Her passion for creative expression later led to her appointment as an art teacher, and helped give root to the establishment of The Arts facet in 1964 at the 14th National Assembly.

Health and Human Services

The Links, Incorporated established the Health and Human Services facet in response to the chronic health disparities that persist in our communities and result in the decreased life expectancy of African-Americans. This new facet brings greater focus, resources, and coordination to The Links, Incorporated’s health initiatives already in existence.
